Malmstrom Air Force base is a USAF missile base located near Great Falls, Montana. Malmstrom is the home of the 341st Missile Wing, whose mission is to defend America with combat-ready Airmen and nuclear forces. Malmstrom AFB also shares resources with the local National Guard unit and municipal organizations such as law enforcement and fire fighters.
Challenge
CineMassive was approached to build a Video Wall large enough to be visible from any vantage in a large control room for Malmstrom AFB’s new emergency response center. When a crises emerged, the thirty person team needed to be able to share maps, weather reports, news, topographical data, and other key information in real-time. The system also needed to be able to display classified and non-classified information, depending on who was present in the room and the nature of the emergency. All of this functionality needed to be packed into a 24/7 reliable system that operators could easily be trained to use effectively during a crisis. Finally, the system needed to fit within a pre established budget and project timeline, so it had to be practical, affordable, and delivered on schedule.
CineMassive Solution
CineMassive displays designed, built, and installed a 24’ wide by 8’ tall Video Wall with 9,562 by 3,072 resolution. In order to ensure that the video wall could be seen from any vantage in the room, the optimal height was selected and the wall was installed at a 15 degree forward leaning angle. The wall can be seen from any station in the emergency response room as well as from the elevated command room. CineMassive’s custom mounting structure facilitated precise panel alignment and provides optimal thermal dispersion, allowing the panels to operate well within safe temperatures without the need for additional active cooling. The custom mounting rail system also makes it possible for panels to be removed and replaced if service is ever required.
Two CineMassive video wall servers power the wall. The twin CineMassive VWS 2812 Alpha Elite Video Wall Controller are each capable of supporting all 28 displays with up to a total resolution of 13,440 by 4,320. Each system is also capable of up to twelve simultaneous digital or analog video captures, so workstations, TV feeds, and most any other video sources can be easily routed to the system and viewed in real-time. The video feeds appear on the wall as independent application windows and can easily be sized and positioned to cover any part of the wall. Built to operate in a 24/7 environment, the average server component MTBF is higher than 100,000 hours, and the Windows Server 2003 operating system facilitates maximum uptime.
The entire system was brought together with a custom Crestron Video Wall Touch Panel interface that was designed and programmed by CineMassive technicians. Using the touch panel, operators can switch between both web browser and video capture layouts. These programmable layouts allow different combinations of video captures and web applications to be pulled up with a single touch, making it easy for users to quickly change between usage scenarios. The touch panel also allows the user to quickly switch between classified and non-classified systems. The system was designed with future expandability in mind, allowing the touch panel to be capable of controlling the room lighting and audio systems all from a single interface.
Summary
CineMassive leveraged its expertise in advanced multi monitor systems to design a solution that would satisfy the unique, mission critical needs of Malmstrom AFB. CineMassive provided design, project management, assembly, and installation in a single turn-key package that fit within the project’s bottom line budget. CineMassive video wall solutions are both practical and cutting edge, allowing customers to achieve optimal project results.
