Florida State University is a major American university with 40,000 students in 15 colleges. FSU’s new Turnbull Conference Center serves as the preeminent conference venue in Florida’s capital city.
Challenge
Florida State University needed a high impact presentation and digital signage solution for the opening of its new Turnbull Conference Center in Tallahassee, Florida. FSU decided that video walls would be the solution they were looking for. After a thorough search process, FSU selected CineMassive Displays to design, build, and install the Video Wall. Although FSU knew that they wanted the high impact, brightness, and resolution of a video wall, they relied on CineMassive to design a solution that fit the available space, met the visibility requirements of the room, could easily be operated by visiting guest speakers, and could be adapted to fit a variety of usage scenarios.
CineMassive Solution
During the design process, CineMassive worked directly with Turnbull staff to ensure that all specifications were met and that the ambitious project would meet with internal approval. CineMassive helped bring the Turnbull vision to life with custom 3d renderings, cut sheets, and diagrams.
After the project was approved, CineMassive Displays built 3x3 and 4x4 ultra narrow video walls for two of Turnbull’s breakout rooms, and an incredible 5x8 ultra narrow video wall for Turnbull’s main auditorium. The auditorium posed the greatest challenge because of its size and unique aspect ratio. The wall had to be large enough to be visible from every seat in the auditorium but still fit within space constraints. CineMassive determined the optimal size and resolution of the video wall for the room.
The CineMassive Video Wall Controller in the Turnbull auditorium was designed to accommodate the unique aspect ratio of the wall. In one mode, the system can display ultra high resolution content designed to specifically for the wall, and in another mode the system can capture video from external sources and scale it to span across the entire wall or a section of the wall. A custom digital signage package allows content in all three rooms to be synchronized with stunning, high definition content.
The mounting structure was designed to provide maximum support, weight distribution, and cooling for the three massive walls. Since all three rooms had to be retrofit to work within a previous design, the mounting structure was designed to allow some of the video distribution hardware to be installed directly behind the video wall without obstructing cooling or creating future maintenance issues.
Summary
The Turnbull Conference Center auditorium video wall is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. CineMassive worked with FSU during every stage of the process, from conception to successful execution. The outcome of the partnership was a video wall that is not only an impressive and novel application of video wall technology, but also achieves a high degree of usability, enabling presenters to use the enormous video wall as easily as they would use a projector. CineMassive Displays is capable of managing projects and developing solutions of most any scale, turning vision into reality. Return To All Case Studies
